Historic map outlining the path of the subterranean waggonway tunnel. The subterranean waggonway tunnel was built in the 1800s. It was built from the Town Moor to the River Tyne for easier transportation of coal from Spital Tongues Main Colliery (also known as Leazes Main Colliery) to the month of the River Tyne and the River Ouse. When World War II broke out, the tunnel was converted into a suitable air raid shelter. Ouseburn Trust holds guided tours of the tunnel complete with historical facts regarding the tunnel itself.
